What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are natural, plant-based oils extracted from plant material such as flowers, buds, leaves, or bark using various methods. Essential oils are praised for their therapeutic properties. Some people use them to aromatherapeutically massage their skin or inhale them to relax and de-stress. Others use them topically to treat various skin conditions.
Essential oils have been used for centuries to improve the health of both the mind and the skin. While many different essential oils can help both the mind and the skin, some of the most popular essential oils for glowing skin include Lavender, Jojoba, and Tea Tree.
Always keep in mind that you're dealing with potent ingredients. Don’t apply them straight to the skin. Instead, mix a couple of drops with a carrier oil, a neutral, plant-based oil like Almond or Grapeseed. Doing a patch test before using essential oils is a good idea, as allergic reactions are widespread. Patch testing is a way to identify if you have an allergic reaction to a substance. It is important to test a small amount on your skin when using any essential oils. Dilute the oil using carrier oils at a ratio of six drops per tablespoon, place the mixture on your inner forearm and monitor for any adverse reactions for the next day.
Note: After doing a patch test, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional if you experience any adverse effects from using essential oils.
Essential Oils vs Carrier Oils
Description
Essential Oils are natural oils that have the fragrance of the plant or plant source from which they were produced. Tend to have a deep, heavy aroma with a strong scent.
Carrier Oils plant-based oils but have minor amounts or no scent to them. They can dilute essential oils to avoid causing harm. They tend to have only a slight scent or are completely unscented.
Application
Essential Oils should not to be applied directly to the skin as these are extremely powerful, highly concentrated, and volatile.
Carrier Oils can able to be applied straight to the skin as these are not very powerful as they dilute easily and are non-volatile. Hence, essential oils need to be diluted with such oils for application.
Extraction
